COUVENT DE SAO DIOGO
The Franciscan convent in Topo, founded in 1661, is a place of tranquillity.
A Franciscan convent founded in 1661, it was rebuilt twice, after the great earthquake of 1757 and again in 1980. True to the vocation of the Franciscans in the Azores, it was an early educational establishment. Today, it is part of a modern complex and forms part of the basic school of the village of Topo. Take the time to stop in the small square in front of the convent, in the shade of the hundred-year-old cedar tree. The convent overlooks a valley that slopes down to the ocean. The place is full of tranquility and the view is magnificent.
