CASA DO MACHADO
A visit to José's parents' house in Ponta Ruiva, where admission is free and the door is always open.
Time has stood still here. In what was once José's parents' house, nothing has moved. A table, a china cabinet, pots and pans, a corn-leaf mattress, tools for working in the fields. José has added a number of objects he's borrowed or received, such as the armchair of what was, for years, the island's only barber. So many witnesses to a time when life in the middle of the Atlantic was hard work. Admission is free, the door to the house is always open, and to the right of it there's a jar where you can leave a coin if you've enjoyed your visit.
