An enormous, massive building that also houses the Ministry of Culture. Inaugurated in 1990, this museum, a major work of Alan García's first term, was never completely finished. The permanent exhibition of archaeology and history has been closed. Only temporary exhibitions on folklore remain. The 6th floor of the museum recalls the actions of the Shining Path terrorist movement in the 1980s, which left 70,000 dead or missing in Peru. The visit is frankly not essential except if you go to a show at the superb Teatro Nacional next door.
