MUSEO LARCO
In a colonial casona marvel of modern Lima, the most important private Pre-Columbian collection brings together over 45,000 pieces. These include beautiful Paracas textiles, used as shrouds and preserved intact after 3,000 years, and stone sculptures from Chavín de Huantar. And let's not forget the bóveda, the chest containing objects made of precious metals and stones, including a fabulous complete set of jewellery worn by a Chimú dignitary: pectoral, bracelets, diadem, earrings.
The Larco Museum owes much of its justly-deserved reputation to its erotic ceramics. Mochica culture is on display here. These fine craftsmen, with their unbridled morals if ever there was one, depicted all the stages of their contemporaries' sexual lives, with great crudity, without omitting either the most scabrous details or the venereal risks incurred. The other unique feature of this museum is the "depósito", a store where thousands of ceramics are stored on shelves and arranged by category (women - a rare theme in these cultures - vampires, wars, sacrifices, flowers, etc.). Another plus: the panels are written in Spanish, English, French, Italian, German and Japanese. Attractive café-restaurant with terrace under a bougainvillea (pasta, local Creole dishes, children's meals). This is THE must-see visit, as the staging and presentation of the exhibits is quite unique in Peru. Specialist professional guides are available, in French only, please book ahead.
