HUACA PUCLLANA
The site evokes a spiritual and administrative center of the Lima culture (200-700 AD). The 30 m-high "adobitos" pyramids (the library-like walls are built of "little adobe books" spaced at intervals, giving them earthquake-resistant properties) are said to have been erected over the bones of sacrificial women and broken ceramic basins. Plants, trees and flowers are also recreated from the period, as is el perro peruano, a typical hairless Peruvian dog... Llamas, alpacas and cuy are also seen in an enclosure. An interesting visit, especially as the site is well promoted with a guide included in the price of the ticket. It's a pity it's so often foggy, as you'd have a great view of Lima from the top of the pyramid!
The night visits are a new way of enjoying the mystical touch of the site. You can't climb the highest of the pyramids, but the site is beautifully illuminated.
Its restaurant (Tel +51 1 445 4042 - www.resthuacapucllana.com) is well worth a visit. Firstly, its location is unique and offers arguably one of the most romantic panoramas in Peru. Secondly, the Peruvian cuisine, with a touch of nouvelle cuisine fusion, is excellent! Count S/ 100 à la carte.
Other restaurants with terraces just outside the Huaca include Gianfranco and La Bodega de la Trattoria. You can also admire the site from outside on the terrace in this affluent residential neighborhood.
