HERTZ CUSCO
Cusco, located in the Andes at an altitude of 3,399 metres, is known as the navel of the world due to its importance in the Inca Empire. The city is an impressive example of Inca engineering, with archaeological sites such as Choquequirao, Sacsayhuaman, Qenko, Tambomachay, Ollantaytambo and above all Machu Picchu, the Inca citadel in the middle of the tropical jungle. Cusco was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 and a New Wonder of the Modern World in 2007. The Cusco region also offers other tourist attractions such as the Sacred Valley, the artisan quarter of San Blas, Maras, Paucartambo and important architecture from the viceroyalty of Peru. Solstice celebrations, Inti Raymi, Holy Week, Corpus Christi and the feast of the "Señor de los Temblores" are important events for the people of Cusco.
