Cusco celebrates the beginning of Holy Week by paying homage to this native Christ who saved the city from an earthquake.
This ceremony originated in 1650 when this dark-skinned Christ was invoked to save the city from an earthquake. It now takes place every Holy Monday. It shows a symbiosis between pre-Columbian beliefs and the Christian corpus. The icon, which is carried around the city while the faithful scatter the petals of ñucchu flowers (a colour that evokes the blood of Christ), is kept in the Cathedral. It is also called in Quechua Taytacha.
