The Festival of the Sun of the Incas is staged with costumes and music in the fortress overlooking Cusco.
The Inti Raymi, a festival given in honor of the Sun, is probably the most famous indigenous festivity in all of Latin America. It is not just a folklore to attract amateur photographers and tourists, the inhabitants are really very attached to this celebration. There are processions and dances throughout the city.
Since 1944, archaeologists and historians of Cusco have been able to establish a ceremony very faithful to the spirit of the Incas which is played under our eyes most often under a radiant sun. In the program: we begin in the early morning by the exit of the Inca of Koricancha which was at the time the imperial residence. Here the act I and the first speech of the Inca are played. Then, the procession passes by the Plaza de Armas and continues in direction of the fortress of Sacsayhuaman where the main ceremony will be played. On the central esplanade, the Inca is enthroned and receives the tributes of the different peoples (the 4 suyos) that constitute the empire through typical dances and offerings. The ceremony ends with the sacrifice of an alpaca. Grandstands are set up all around and the seats are negotiated at a high price but they are the best seats. The crowd, it, masses on the heights of the archaeological site with the view below.
