TREK CHOQUEQUIRAO - MACHU PICCHU
As long as it's an exceptional adventure, this one will remain engraved in your memory, as it unites two of the region's must-see Inca fortresses and follows a demanding Inca Trail that very few people take. However, we advise you to use a recommended agency that is an expert in trekking/expeditions.
Depending on the version, this trek lasts between 5 and 7 days, the last of which is devoted to the icing on the cake: Machu Picchu! Here is the version from one of the most serious agencies, Yunka Trek (http://yunka-trek.com).
Day 1: Cusco - Cachora - Santa Rosa. Depart Cusco by private vehicle for the village of Cachora, then the Capuliyoc pass, starting point of the trek (2,800 m). The first challenge is a 4-hour descent to Playa Rosalina, located on the banks of the Apurimac River at an altitude of 1,400 metres. Cross the Apurimac river bridge and climb to Santa Rosa Alto (2h). Camp.
Day 2: Santa Rosa - Marampata - Choquequirao. Climb to Marampata (2,850 m altitude). From here, after a 1h30 hike over flat terrain, we reach our camp at the foot of the Choquequirao site (3,030 m). Afternoon visit to the site, the ushnu and the white llamas. Camp.
Day 3: Choquequirao - Pinchahuniyoc - Rio Blanco - Maizal. Departure for the Choquequirao pass. Long descent into the rio Blanco valley, to the remains of Pinchahuniyoc: this complex of terraces, ritual fountains and canals is still part of Choquequirao, testifying to the exceptional size of the site, then on to the rio Blanco (1,800 m) to climb the opposite slope and set up camp in the upper part of the hamlet of Maizal (2,900 m).
Day 4: Maizal - San Juan Pass - Yanama. Difficult ascent to Col San Juan (4,200 m). Exceptional view of the peaks of the Vilcabamba Cordillera. Then descent into the Yanama valley (3,500 m) under the watchful eye of Nevado Pumasillo.
Day 5: Yanama - Santa Teresa - Hidro Electrica - Machu Picchu Pueblo. Transfer to Santa Teresa. The hot springs in this village are the most inviting in the region. Arrive at Hidro-Electrica, then walk along the railroad to Machu Picchu Pueblo after a 2.5-hour hike (flat).
Day 6: Machu Picchu Pueblo - Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco. A day devoted to visiting Peru's major archaeological complex, "scientifically" rediscovered in 1911 by American anthropologist Hiram Bingham. Return transfer.
