It took a hundred years (1633-1733) to build this mixed-race, baroque architectural marvel by the Tonsurados, clerics with shorn heads. It was originally called Iglesia Matriz de San Antonio. Two white bell towers frame the elaborate red stone portico and set the structure majestically on the Plaza de Armas. Inside, one can admire the numerous altarpieces and the altarpiece gilded with gold leaf that illuminate the dark nave, which is covered with beautiful paintings by indigenous artists representing paradise and purgatory.
