On December 9, 1824, on the pampa of Quinua, 9,000 Spanish soldiers confronted 5,750 Independents led by General Sucre. This mythical battle lasted only 2 hours and ended in a Peruvian victory. It has a great symbolic importance and on the spot a rather majestic obelisk was drawn up in the honor of the combatants at 3 300 meters of altitude. Since then, every 9th of December is a public holiday in the Peruvian calendar.
