The most incredible processions in the country take place here in Ayacucho, the city of 33 churches. Fervour and madness are intertwined.
Holy Week begins on the Friday before Good Friday and lasts until Easter Sunday. It is celebrated with fervor everywhere and is a period of public holidays. One city has made it a spectacular tradition: Ayacucho. Every year, thousands of visitors from all over Peru and neighbouring countries come to Ayacucho: the streets are covered with carpets of flowers that the processions trample in their crazy farandole all over the city. A very intense and rather alcoholic festival, let's admit it, to see at least once in its life.
