It was built in 1540, in front of the Casa Jáuregui, in a small square. This church was one of the buildings inherited by the Order of Mercedaries when they arrived in 1540, and may well be the second oldest in Ayacucho. The church has a single nave and is six times longer than it is wide. Behind the whitewashed stone façade lies the courageous María Parado de Bellido, an indigenous revolutionary who was one of the first to stand up for independence, taken prisoner by the Spaniards and executed.
