TREK DE QUILCAYHUANCA
This trek has the advantage of being close to Huaraz, but offering almost total solitude. The start is identical to that of the Lake Churup trek. Count S/ 70 by cab to Pitec and S/ 90 to the entrance to Quilcayhuanca.
In the day version, you just reach the first camp as an acclimatization walk.
An itinerant version is also available:
On Day1, you hike up the valley to set up camp at 4,200 m (5-hour hike), then another 1.5 hours to the lake just above and back. Don't go off to the left, or you'll climb up the moraine and end up above the lake.
Day2 (7-8hrs walk), you'll have to climb again to cross a pass at 5,100 m and switch to the valley to the north-west. Be sure to follow the cairns on the way up, so as not to lose the trail. On the steep descent, make sure you find your way. This is a perilous passage and not suitable for everyone. Finally, set up camp in the valley, at 4,300 m, not far from the river.
For the3rd and final day, take it easy down the curve of the valley (approx. 5 hrs).
Finally, on leaving the park, you have two options: on the left, you reach the parking area for Lake Churup and pray for a car to stop and take you back, or on the right, you hike down to Marian (2h more). This trek ensures maximum solitude, but requires experience and good physical condition. The reward: the view of the untouched peaks of the Cordillera Blanca is simply magical!
