IGLESIA LA MERCED

Built in 1536 and rebuilt in 1634 after being completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1619, the Church of La Merced is the best testimony to the city's opulence, an opulence that has never been denied over the centuries. Baroque in style, full of gold on the wall and on the altar, it also contains a sculpture of the Virgin, representing her standing on a black crescent moon, and crowned with flames or rays of the sun: the two main stars of pre-Hispanic civilizations. Behind it, the convent that can also be visited.
