Together with the Malecón Tarapacá, the Plaza de Armas of Iquitos is the favourite promenade of the locals, who come here to cool off in the late afternoon, as night falls. Around the Plaza de Armas are the Palacio Municipal and the Iglesia Matriz cathedral (built between 1911 and 1924), which is neo-Gothic in style and has a Swiss clock. The latter is beautifully lit at night. In the middle of the square, a central fountain and finally, the famous Casa de Fierro, a work signed by Gustave Eiffel.
