OMMEGANG
To commemorate Charles V's joyous entry into the 16th century, nearly 1,400 extras gather each year.
For fans of historical festivities, some 1,400 extras gather every year for the Ommegang. This is Brussels' oldest historical evocation, commemorating the joyous entry of Charles V and his heir Philip in the 16th century. Most of the participants are descendants of historical figures, and parade in period costume. To make the event even more distinctive, giants and flag-wavers take part in this procession, which has been listed as a Unesco intangible cultural heritage site since 2019.
