The oldest of Brussels' folk traditions! Every year, the May tree is planted, accompanied by a procession.
Brussels' oldest folk tradition! There are many legends about the origins of this celebration, which dates back to 1308. One thing is certain: on that day, Brussels won out over the city of Leuven. Since then, seven centuries of folklore have followed. Every year (except 2020), the Meyboom (May tree) is planted before 5 p.m., otherwise the advantage would revert to the Leuveners. As this has never happened before, we don't really know what would happen in that case... Procession departs from: rue des Marais.
