Admired by Victor Hugo, the Saints-Michel-et-Gudule cathedral is a jewel of gothic style. The stained glass windows alone are worth a visit.
Visible from afar, recognizable by its Brabantine Gothic towers, the cathedral was originally the church of Saint-Michel-au-Mont, built on one of Brussels' hills. It was replaced by a Romanesque collegiate church in 1047. The relics of Saint Gudule were brought here from the church of Saint-Géry, and the building, renamed Saints-Michel-et-Gudule, became a place of pilgrimage. The stained glass windows in the side chapels date from the 16th century, after cartoons by Bernard Van Orley.
