Her love for African elephants has inspired Daphne Sheldrick to dedicate more than 50 years of her life to saving her little protégés. Now threatened with extinction, elephants are the victims of ongoing illegal poaching, especially since the rise of China and the Far East, where demand for ivory continues to increase. In her autobiography "An African Love Story" (Flammarion), she tells that elephants have a social and family pattern very similar to that of men, and remain dependent on their parents for a long time. This is why in 1977 she created an orphanage in Nairobi where her teams provide education to young orphaned elephants. The shelter offers to adopt an elephant for $50, and to monitor its progress daily in the rehabilitation center. A beautiful adventure that she invites us to share
