One of the most beautiful and easiest climbs in Africa, an easy to spot trail in Mount Elgon National Park
The ascent of Mount Elgon is among the most beautiful and easiest in Africa. The reason for this is simple, a motorable track takes you up to 3,500m. This track is muddy, rocky and, in places, very steep, a 4x4 is necessary. It takes between 1 and 3 hours to reach Chorlim Gate and the end of the road (about 30 km). You park your car and set off for the summit. The path is easy to spot and the climb is not difficult. At the end of approximately 2 hours 30 of walk in an imposing decoration, one reaches the collar of Koitoboss where it is possible (but in theory not really authorized) to plant its tent. The site, at the foot of a huge rock face, is magnificent. From the pass, it takes another hour to reach the summit.
The return to the car park takes just over an hour. So you can make the ascent in a day. If you have time and a detailed map, you can go down into the crater to the hot springs of Suam (2 hours from Koitoboss pass). You can have a ranger accompany you for a small fee. There are two other routes outside the park to the summit: Masara and Kimili. The latter, which was the most popular, is now closed. The best time to go to Mount Elgon is between December and March, with April and May and August and September being particularly wet.
