LEWA WILDLIFE CONSERVANCY
Reserve with an exceptional richness of fauna, the most famous and the most beautiful ranch of Kenya, closed in rainy season.
The 26,000 ha estate is located about 15 km before Isiolo, on the left side of the road when coming from Nanyuki. A sign indicates the entrance. There are then about 10 km of good track to reach the reserve. Be careful, the reserve is closed during the rainy season (April and May). This is probably the most famous and beautiful ranch (now a wildlife sanctuary) in Kenya. Lewa Wildlife Conservancy was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013. Visiting it is an enchantment. One must stay in one of the luxurious lodges in the conservancy to enjoy it and soak up the beauty of the place. In the middle of extremely varied landscapes (savannahs, forests, swamps...) evolves a fauna of an exceptional richness with, as a backdrop, the silhouette of Mount Kenya. It is a sort of Maasai Mara in miniature. The excellent management of the fauna has allowed the animals to reproduce and grow in complete safety, to the point that some are now too numerous (giraffes, elephants by period, zebras). It is home to over 14% of Kenya's black rhino population and over 12% of the world's population of the iconic Grevy's zebra. The only animals that could possibly fail you are lions (few in number), elephants (when they have migrated north) or the rare sitatunga antelope (very shy and hiding in the swamps).
