a seaside site that was a lively trading port and an obligatory stop for Persian and Arab merchants on their way home
The site is less imposing than Gedi, but its seaside location lends it extraordinary charm. This ancient Swahili city, built around 1350, was a bustling trading port and an obligatory stopover for Persian and Arab merchants on their way home. For reasons unknown, this flourishing city disappeared barely a century later. The ruins of a few houses and three mosques built of coral stone can still be seen. If you're lucky enough to be alone, the site is truly enchanting.
