Cross erected by Vasco de Gama which symbolizes the good relations between the inhabitants of Malindi and the Portuguese
This cross, erected by Vasco de Gama in 1499, today marks the entrance to the port of Malindi. It can be reached via a short footpath. It symbolizes the good relations between the inhabitants of Malindi and the Portuguese. From here, you can see the coastline as far as the eye can see. The town was the only one on the coast to offer a friendly welcome to Portuguese sailors. Nearby is a small chapel, for many years the only place of worship (among Malindi's 17 mosques) for the permanent Portuguese community, which numbered no more than 40.
