Cross erected by Vasco de Gama which symbolizes the good relations between the inhabitants of Malindi and the Portuguese
This cross, erected by Vasco da Gama in 1499, now marks the entrance to the Malindi harbour; it is reached by a small path. It symbolizes the good relations between the people of Malindi and the Portuguese. Malindi was the only town on the coast to give a friendly welcome to the Portuguese sailors. Next to it is a small chapel, which was the only one among 17 mosques; it could accommodate 16 Christians at a time. It was for a long time the place of worship for the permanent Portuguese community, which numbered no more than 40 people.
