UNDERGROUND CHAPEL OF SANTA AGNES
Underground chapel in the cave of Santa Agnès with a small nave of rectangular base separated from the presbytery with the altar
This small temple is located one and a half kilometres from the municipality of Sant Antoni de Portmany. Declared a national monument, this underground chapel is the oldest Christian place of worship on the island. It consists of a small nave with a rectangular base that is separate from the presbytery and has an altar. When this chapel was discovered in 1907 in the cave of Santa Agnes, pieces of Arab ceramics were found there, suggesting that the place may have been used for other cults.
