Discover the island of S'Espalmador located 150 m from Formentera and do not miss its long white sandy beaches
Following Ses Illetes to the tip of the island, you'll see the island of S'Espalmador, just 150 m from Formentera, directly opposite. From the Es Ministre restaurant parking lot, which marks the end of the dirt road, it will take you around 30 minutes to reach the tip of the peninsula. However, to reach Espalmador (if you don't have a boat), you'll need to book a crossing aboard the Barca Bahia (information available from the Es Ministre restaurant). Crossing on foot is strictly forbidden!
When you arrive on the island, keep your eyes peeled: long white sandy beaches await you. Despite the influx of boats from Ibiza and Formentera, you'll feel like you're at the end of the world! Be prepared: bring water and snacks, as there's absolutely nothing to eat here. The 3 km² island is privately owned, and was purchased in 1927 by Bernard Cinnamond James, known as Don Bernat. He built a superb house on the seafront, as well as a small house towards the interior of the island where the island's janitors were housed during his absence. Today, the large house belongs to Don Bernat's descendants, but the island is no longer truly "private", being part of the Ses Salines Nature Park. As you walk towards the janitors' house, you'll see a crowd of people covering themselves in mud before stretching out in the sun. Even if you're tempted by the experience, be aware that it's absolutely forbidden.
