MUSEO SA BASSA BLANCA
Museum in Alcúdia with two underground spaces and a huge tropical garden featuring monumental animal sculptures.
Formerly named Fundación Yannick y Ben Jakober, after their founders, the site recently changed its name to Museo Sa Bassa Blanca (MSBB). At the origin of this project, a couple: Yannick (over 80 years old), of French-Vietnamese origin, and Ben (90 years old), Austro-Hungarian; both artists and collectors. Having collected works of art from all over the world throughout their bohemian lives, they came to amass a large number of creations. Today, the museum is, to our great pleasure, open to the public. One could summarize what we find here along three axes: nature, art and architecture. In fact, several spaces cohabit. First, the immense tropical garden, filled with monumental animal sculptures, creations of the couple: here a rhinoceros or an octopus 7 meters high, there a tombstone with a comical epitaph... The visitor goes from surprise to surprise. Two underground spaces then offer two very specific immersions. The Sokrates space, heterogeneous, immerses us in contemporary art, each element responding to the other according to a continuity of meaning desired by the founders. The NINS space exhibits classical portraits of children from royal families from the 16th to the 19th century. Striking. But the highlight of the show is the house itself, designed by the famous Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy: each room is an architectural marvel as well as a thematic immersion in African and Aboriginal art. A must-see!
