CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA
A huge baroque church with a sumptuous organ, built in Barcelona in 1808 by the famous organ builder Johann Kiburz
This huge baroque church, rebuilt in 1772, houses a sumptuous organ, built in Barcelona in 1808 by the famous (German!) organ builder Johann Kiburz. According to legend, it was intended for the Sistine Chapel, but the ship carrying it was caught in a storm that killed some of the crew. The captain of the frigate, overcome with religious fervour, vowed to offer it to the first port where he landed safely, which he did when he reached Maó. The instrument is considered one of the best in Europe.
