In July 2016, in extremis before the Olympic Games, line 1 of the VLT. (Veículo Leve sobre Trilhos), an ultra-modern tramway, was inaugurated between Rio's bus terminal (the Rodoviária Novo Rio) and Santos Dumont airport, via the new Porto Maravilha and the grand Avenida Rio Branco. Line 2, inaugurated in February 2017, links Praça Formosa to Praça XV. It can be handy for getting around the center, but it's not very fast. On the other hand, it's a fairly safe way to get around Rio.
