The celebrations of São Sebastião in Rio are marked by masses and a procession from the church of São Sebastião to the cathedral.
The founding of Rio de Janeiro (Estácio de Sá) by the Portuguese on March1, 1565 is commemorated every March1. The Portuguese captain named the city São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro in honour of Dom Sebastião I, King of Portugal, who ruled the country at the time. The rest of the name of the town, whose site was discovered on January1, 1502, is based on a misunderstanding on the part of the discoverers. They mistook Guanabara Bay for the mouth of a river.
