This honorable building was inaugurated in 1813 by Dom João VI himself under the name of teatro de São João. Some major historical events took place here. The Brazilian constitution is said to have been signed here. In cultural terms, the theater has marked the Brazilian scene through the ages, offering hundreds of operettas, comedies, tragedies and concerts. From Sarah Bernhardt to Maria Bethania, many stars have graced its stages. Completely renovated in 2009, the theater offers a quality program accessible to all.
