CATEDRAL SÃO SEBASTIÃO
São Sebastião Metropolitan Cathedral with modernist architecture inspired by the Mayan pyramids of Yucatán
The São Sebastião Metropolitan Cathedral, whose modernist architecture by Edgar da Fonseca is inspired by the Mayan pyramids of Yucatan, is a religious edifice of impressive dimensions (75 m high and 106 m in diameter). Inaugurated in 1976, it is one of the largest Catholic buildings in the world, seating 20,000 worshippers. The four gigantic interior stained glass windows (60 m high) give the whole a warm, serene tone that contrasts with the cathedral's austere, monolithic exterior, with its so-called Brutalist architecture.
