IGREJA NOSSA SENHORA DA CANDELÁRIA
Neoclassical church with a magnificent stone dome surrounded by 8 white marble statues
La Candelaria was originally a chapel built in 1634 by the sailor Antonio Martins Palma, who had survived a severe storm. The story of the storm is painted on the church ceiling. The neoclassical church was inaugurated in 1811, replacing the old chapel. The stone dome by Lioz Abancado de Lisbonne, surrounded by eight white marble statues, is magnificent, as are the bronze doors at the entrance to the church. 8 people were murdered here in 1993 by militiamen.
