Church symbolizing the apotheosis of São Francisco, with Brazil's first perspective painting on the ceiling
Inaugurated in 1737, it is one of the richest Baroque churches of 18th-century Brazil. The ceiling features the first perspective painting in Brazil. It symbolizes the apotheosis of São Francisco and was painted between 1737 and 1740 by Caetano da Costa Coelho. At the exit, a small terrace overlooks the north-western part of the city. In front is the gateway to the cemetery of the third religious order, built in the early 19th century in neoclassical style.
