The place is full of vibrations(Brasil, Brasil), which can be heard on guided tours or felt at matches. We can't recommend going to a soccer match at the Maracanã, the mythical stadium home to Flamengo, the biggest and most popular team in Rio and Brazil, as well as the rival team Fluminense. Flamengo's torcida (supporters' club) is reputed to be the hottest in the city, if not the country, and the spectacle in the stands is unforgettable, even for those allergic to the game!
Check the newspapers for details of upcoming matches (the clasicos: Fla-Vasco, Fla-Flu, Fla-Botafogo... are the most spectacular) and buy tickets directly from the Flamengo club headquarters. Find out more. Some stands are more exposed to fan violence. Flamenguists can take advantage of this opportunity to buy a small camiseta rubro-negra (red and black jersey) from the club's beautiful boutique. Don't hesitate to get there early to make the most of the rising atmosphere and the energy emanating from the nação flamenguista (the Flamengo nation!).
Renovated for the 2014 World Cup, the mythical stadium has been reduced to around 78,000 seats (compared with 200,000 in the 1970s!). Guided tours are also available.
