EDIFÍCIO JOSEPH GIRE
The city's first skyscraper, 22 storeys high and 102 m tall, on the Plaça Maúa, designed by French architect Joseph Gire
Built at the end of the 1920s on Place Mauá, the city's first skyscraper, nicknamed "A Noite" ("the night"), has 22 storeys and a height of 102 metres. Designed by French architect Joseph Gire, designer of the Copacabana Palace, it launched the post-modern, vertical wave of architecture in central Rio, influenced by American architecture. Having fallen into disuse during the years of abandonment of central Rio, government agencies have now taken up residence here. It is not open to the public.
