REAL GABINETE PORTUGUÊS DE LEITURA
Magnificent neo-Manuélin-style library with over 350,000 volumes, some dating back to the and centuries
It's one of Rio's architectural jewels of the 19th century, yet rarely visited. This magnificent neo-Manuelan library, inspired by Portuguese religious buildings, in particular the St. Jerome monastery in Lisbon, was inaugurated in 1837 by Dom Pedro II, and contains over 350,000 volumes, some dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. The main book room is breathtakingly beautiful. Quite simply, it's one of the most beautiful libraries in the world!
