PALÁCIO ITAMARATY
Museum housing a map library with a collection of maps, atlases and globes, as well as a library with various volumes
Itamaraty Palace is a superb example of neoclassical architecture. Completed in 1854, it housed the President of the Republic from 1889 to 1897, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1899 to 1970. The museum it housed was once open to the public, but is now closed. The archives contain almost 6 million documents dating back to 1808. The map library houses a collection of over 30,000 maps, atlases and globes. The library houses almost 160,000 volumes, as well as a newspaper collection of over 1,500 titles.
