BUNG OF SANTA TERESA - BONDINHO
The little yellow funicular has been connecting the centro to the bohemian district of Santa Teresa for a century, passing through the arches of Lapa.
Le bonde (or bondinho) is the affectionate name of the city's yellow tramway. Only one remains in operation. It travels back and forth between Centro and Santa Teresa, passing over the Lapa arches. This retro yellow wagon goes down the morro on the main street and is a must for the neighborhood. It's the most pleasant way to get to Santa Teresa during the day.
Its gradual rehabilitation since 2015 has given the bohemian district back some of its lost soul. An accident killed several people in August 2011, bringing the service to a halt.
At present, it only operates on part of its historic route, every 20 minutes. You have to queue patiently to catch the bondinho, which takes you to Santa Teresa from Rio's business center, near the cathedral, the Petrobras towers and the Carioca metro station. The tramway currently runs as far as Largo do Guimarães. For safety reasons, you need a seat to get on the bondinho, so much for the folklore of yesteryear.
During Carnival, this little streetcar, adored by the locals, dons its festive finery and even becomes a part of the party. One of the blocos parades on board.
Buses no. 6, 7 and 14 run up and down the morro de Santa Teresa from Lapa. This makes it easier to get in and out of Santa Teresa, as the bondinho is now more of an attraction than a form of public transport.
