It was one of Rio's oldest and most prestigious museums. It was ravaged by fire in September 2018. Intellectuals, students and researchers were quick to express their indignation, denouncing drastic budget cuts in the field of culture. It has only partially reopened. You can visit the garden and see the façade. Opened in 1818, the museum housed over 20 million items, many of them destroyed, including "Luzia", the oldest human fossil in Latin America, discovered in Minas in 1970. It dated back 12,000 years.
