MUSEU HISTÓRICO NACIONAL
Museum in the port district, with an inner courtyard ideal for admiring a collection of cannons from the to the century
This museum was created in 1922 in the port district to commemorate the centenary of Brazilian independence. It is one of the largest museums in Brazil, with a floor space of 20,000 m² and over 270,000 objects. It is a unique opportunity to understand the history of Brazil, from colonization to the beginnings of the Republic, thanks to the beauty of the site, its works and its constant exhibitions. The Republican period of Brazil's history, which began in 1889, can be discovered at the Palace of the Republic in Catete.
The museum is housed in a former fort where the king's artillery was stationed, and boasts an inner courtyard where you can admire a superb collection of cannons dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries
Some of the cannons are decorated with sculpted heads of mythological origin, as the French were wont to do.
The carriage room is a rich reminder that, before the Emperor's arrival in 1808, means of transport in Rio were not very well developed: narrow pavements, little light and no one to clean the streets. In 1808, the King of Portugal, fleeing Napoleon's invasion, arrived with 20,000 members of his court and 40 baggage vehicles. He undertook numerous works to improve Rio's streets. The military room features a collection of military uniforms from different periods, as well as firearms, sabres and paintings of Don Pedro II, the naval battle of Riachuelo and the terrible 19th-century war with Paraguay.
