MUSEU DE ARTE DO RIO - MAR
Magnificent Rio Art Museum on the famous Praça Mauá, with temporary exhibitions featuring photography
In just a few years, the MAR, Rio Art Museum, has become one of Rio de Janeiro's, and indeed Brazil's, cultural hotspots. Part of an ambitious program to revitalize the center of Rio, it symbolizes the cultural renaissance sought by President Dilma Rousseff's government. This magnificent Rio Art Museum, MAR, opened its doors in 2014 after several years of work. It is located on Praça Mauá, in the rehabilitated Porto Maravilha district, the "marvellous port", of the new Rio, together with the new Museu do Amanhã. The MAR is spread over two buildings: the remarkable Palacete Dom João VI, built in an eclectic style inaugurated in 1918, but left abandoned for decades after the port became disused, and the second building, a modern structure that was the Mariano Procopio bus terminal before being transformed into a museum. Today, it houses a cafeteria on the first floor, exhibition rooms and a restaurant with terrace on the top floor. A wave-shaped structure spans the modern museum and the old building, uniting past and future. As such, collections from Brazil's Baroque past coexist with exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, along an interactive, highly instructive and entertaining tour of Rio's history and culture. Numerous temporary exhibitions focus on photography. Highly recommended.
