MUSEU DE ARTE MODERNA - MAM
Museum with film library and collection of modern Brazilian art and works by foreign artists
The museum was closed for renovation in 2024, as it hosted the G20 forum, chaired by Lula, under its dome in November of that year, before being reinstated as a museum of modern art. Since it opened to the public in 1948, Rio's MAM has been one of the most important modern art museums in Brazil and Latin America in terms of the number and quality of works on display. It brings together 11,000 works of art belonging to diplomat and patron Gilberto Chateaubriand. This sumptuous collection includes modern Brazilian art (notably works by Emiliano di Cavalcanti), as well as numerous works by foreign artists (Picasso, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock and Le Corbusier).
The museum has a triple functional dimension of "art-education-culture". The heart of the project is to promote art in its various forms, but also the social inclusivity of this place of culture for all the populations of Rio and its region. In addition to its art collections, the MAM houses a specialized library and an extremely rich and creative film library.
If the content is a must for modern art lovers, the container is also well worth a visit. This magnificent building with its pure modernist forms is set in the heart of a vast park in Centro de Rio.
The park and gardens were designed by landscape architect Burle Marx. The restless waves of the ocean appear on the lawns. Restaurant open for lunch.
