PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE
An artistic, cultural and historical heritage of the city of Rio de Janeiro, inspired by Lisbon's public promenade.
This square was inspired by Lisbon's public promenade, inaugurated in the 1760s. The Viceroy of the State of Brazil, Luís de Vasconcelos e Sousa, between 1779 and 1783, commissioned sculptor and architect Valentim da Fonseca e Silva ("Mestre Valentim") to build a park for the city of Rio. It was completely renovated between 2016 and 2017. Excavations revealed the remains of the "theater-casino" destroyed in the 1930s. These developments have enabled the city of Rio to enhance its artistic, cultural and historical heritage.
