PRAIA DO ARPOADOR
Ideal sunset beach, at the start of Ipanema Bay, for surfers and bodyboarders
Arpoador beach (and the rocky point of the same name, which means "harpooner" in Portuguese, as whales were fished here) is located at the beginning of Ipanema Bay, opposite Posto 7. Surfers love it. To the left of the rock, the small, wild beach of Diabo (the Devil) is so named because of its incessant eddies. From the top of the rock, there's a fine view over the districts of Ipanema and Leblon. It's here that the sunset is at its most spectacular, with a superb view of Ipanema Bay and the sun between the Dois Irmãos mountains.
