PARQUE NACIONAL DA TIJUCA - FLORESTA DA TIJUCA
Park area furthest from Rio, with 2 hiking trails: Circuit dos picos and Circuit do Vale Histórico
This is the area of the park furthest from Rio, located further inland and higher up. Access is via the road that runs from Cosme Velho to Tijuca. There are two hiking trails, to be followed with a guide. The paths are poorly signposted and potentially dangerous:
Dos picos" circuit, linking the Papagayo and Tijuca peaks on a 19 km trail that also passes through Tijuca Mirim, Archer, Morro do Anhanguera, Excelsior Pedra do Conde, Morro da Taquara, Castelos da Taquara and Cocanha. Quite difficult because of the height difference, for experienced hikers especially if the weather is very hot.
Circuit do " Vale Histórico", a 7.5 km trail passing through the ruins, fountains and monuments of the old coffee fazendas. Hikers will be surprised to discover a Wallace fountain in the middle of nature, or the Mayrink chapel. Optionally, 4 caves can be visited via an additional trail.
Tip: free guided tours are offered every Thursday at 9 a.m. at the park's visitor center (arrive at 8:30 a.m. on foot, as there's a 30-minute climb to include). The first is the "Slave Trail", which highlights the work of slaves on the coffee plantations (passing through Cachoeira das Almas, Lago das Fadas and as Ruínas do Midosi). The second is the "artists' trail", following in the footsteps of painters Nicolas Taunay and Cândido Portinari, and landscape artists Glaziou and Burle Marx. It passes through Capela Mayrink, Mirante da Cascatinha and Recanto dos Artistas.
