This is one of the most emblematic squares in Rio's historic center. In the 20th century, several important buildings were constructed here, including the Superior Court, the Municipal Theatre, the Pedro Ernesto Palace and the Biblioteca Nacional. Its name pays homage to the President of Brazil, Floriano Peixoto. Its nickname, "Cinelândia", refers to the old cinemas that once occupied it. It is also the name of the square's metro station. A former site of anti-fascist resistance.
