CAIS DO VALONGO
An exceptional archaeological site, where nearly a million African slaves landed in Rio between 1811 and 1831
This exceptional archaeological site was uncovered during the construction of the Porto Maravilha. It was the wharf where almost a million African slaves disembarked in Rio between 1811 and 1831. 15 years later, the wharf was transformed for the marriage of Princess Teresa Cristina to Emperor Don Pedro II and renamed "Empress Wharf". Between 1850 and 1920, the neighborhood of former slaves earned the nickname "Pequena Africa". It bears witness to the scale of the triangular trade in Brazil, which received almost half of all African slaves.
