Rio is rich in natural wonders. However, due to its remoteness, some places remain little-known to tourists and Cariocas alike. The Marambaia restinga is an extraordinary natural site straddling the municipalities of Rio, Mangaratiba and Itaguai. A long strip of sand separates the ocean from a lagoon of exceptional biodiversity. Fragile and unique coastal ecosystems, mangroves, dunes and sandbanks are home to a wide variety of plants and animals. Access is restricted. It depends on the Brazilian Navy.
