CASA CULTURAL LAURA ALVIM
Cultural center organizing all kinds of artistic events paying tribute to Laura Alvim, a woman in love with art
Behind the story of this cultural center lies that of Laura Alvim, an ambitious little girl with a love of art, who from an early age set out to make her home on Ipanema beach a place of art open to all. Born in 1902 in Rio, she moved with her parents to the almost uninhabited beach of Ipanema. From a wealthy, intellectual background, she expressed her desire to become an actress from an early age - a destiny her parents refused to allow her to pursue. So she took the bold step of transforming one of the outbuildings of their house into an art room with a stage, which she opened to artists and intellectuals from Carioca. It was here that many of the great figures of the time took their place, including Tônia Carreiro, Fernanda Montenegro and Camila Amado. An anti-conformist, she refused to marry. When her father died, Laura Alvim preferred to devote herself to the democratization of art, turning her house into a cultural space in its own right. Although her house remained open to artists, she was never able to bring her project to fruition, owing to a lack of funds following poor investments on the stock market. On her deathbed in 1983, Laura Alvim bequeathed her house to the city of Rio, which realized her dream in 1986, six months after her death. Now a cultural center in its own right, it hosts a wide range of artistic events: exhibitions, cinema, theater... all paying tribute to this woman who loved art.
